Survival of the Square-ist
Fans of Minecraft aesthetics and dungeon crawling roguelikes, take note: there’s a new kid on the block. Survive! Mr. Cube, developed by Korean publisher IntraGames, has just released on Nintendo Switch following its April launch on PlayStation 4.
Initially released in 2016 for iOS and Android devices, Survive! Mr. Cube is a game with many of the same roguelite elements you’ve come to expect from the genre. Levels are procedurally generated, and player progression is tied to a single life. Die, and you start off as a new character, complete with his/her own unique appearance, abilities, and weapons. The goal? To make your way through various “stages” across four different themed levels. By felling the powerful guardians that guard areas of the map, players can access certain portals that whisk them closer to the end of each level.
As evidenced by the title, Survive! Mr. Cube, stars the character of “Mr. Cube.” Once committed to a happy life alongside a beautiful bride, Mr. Cube loses everything when he is tricked by an old man into swallowing a mysterious pill at a local pub. Waking up in a dangerous world, Mr. Cube becomes the sacrificial guardian of one of many parallel dimensions. Alongside his parallel gatekeepers, Mr. Cube desperately searches for a way out, back to his wife and cherished life.
